What if it’s blocked?
Web 2.0 has an entire list of awesome sites with great educational pontential that are being blocked in K-12 schools. One of these sites is YouTube. As a future educator, I use YouTube all the time in my presentations. It is unfortunate that it and other sites comprable in classrooms are blocked. We are taking away the potential for students to be more creative with their multimedia projects and sharing. Also, it takes away teachers use of YouTube for clips from history, a relevant television clip, song lyrics, an expert opinion, etc. It is sad, because that is what technology should be all about: advancement not restrictment.
Ok so it is true that YouTube is a site that ANYONE can upload videos onto and because of this freedom, a great deal of questionable material is on it regarding a classroom of children. I can completely understand the reasoning behind blocking sites like these in schools. I know administrator’s must think it would be impossible for teachers to monitor what is happening on every students computer. And they are probably right. Just to be cautious and not be held liable for students viewing something inappropriate the entire site is blocked.
What can I do as future teacher who uses YouTube all the time – while still meeting the district’s need to protect? The easiest way to solve this problem is to download whatever video you would like to share in the classroom at home on and then bring it school.

That’s one way around the block…another would be using sites such as TeacherTube and SchoolTube that aren’t blocked….
